Color Design 360 recently completed the full restoration of a magnificent 1950s bronze and mixed-media fountain located in a private residence in Miami Beach. The multi-tiered sculpture, featuring bronze musicians, cherubs, lion heads, and garland details, had suffered significant corrosion and discoloration due to decades of exposure to city water, chlorine, and salt air from the nearby bay.

The restoration process involved a delicate balance of diluted acids and neutralizing treatments to halt metal erosion, followed by a hand-applied pigmented oil patina inspired by the fountain's original finish. These fast-drying, exterior-grade oils were formulated with rosewood, linseed, and Japan drier, absorbing into the etched bronze surface under natural sunlight. This technique sealed and revived the bronze’s tone while preserving the original artistic detail on the figures’ dress forms and facial features.

The stone base around the fountain pool, originally cracked from impact, was color-matched and recast to blend with the local sandstone. Additional underwater support blocks were painted to match the bronze for a cohesive look. The outer perimeter of the fountain was highlighted with decorative glass chunks that reflect color when wet, providing a vibrant accent that ties the work into the surrounding landscape.

This restoration ensures durability for at least 5 years, and the technique is also suitable for restoring concrete outdoor sculptures. Of all the fountain sculptures Color Design 360 has worked on, this remains a favorite, perfectly proportioned, elegant, and timeless in its design.
