37 — Q: Does Color Design 360 Offer Decorative Finishes?
A: Absolutely. Decorative and specialty finishes have been at the heart of Color Design 360 for more than 35 years.
Decorative finishing is not an additional service we recently introduced—it has been an integral part of our work from the beginning.
As two professionally trained artists, we bring our fine-art background together with decades of hands-on experience in painting, color, restoration, materials, and decorative techniques. This allows us to approach a surface not simply as something to paint, but as part of the overall composition of an interior.
Our decorative finishes are individually developed for the architecture, lighting, furnishings, color palette, and personality of each space.
What Are Decorative Finishes?
Decorative finishes are specialized artistic painting techniques used to create color, depth, movement, texture, patina, or the illusion of another material.
Depending on the desired effect, a decorative finish can be subtle and sophisticated or become the focal point of an entire room.
We can create finishes inspired by wood, marble, stone, aged metals, natural patinas, layered plaster, textiles, and other materials, or develop an original finish specifically for a client's interior.
These techniques can be applied to walls, ceilings, doors, architectural details, woodwork, cabinetry, furniture, and selected decorative objects.
Decorative & Specialty Finishes
Depending upon the project, our work can include:
Wood Graining & Faux Bois — One of our specialties. We can recreate the visual character and grain of wood on doors, furniture, architectural elements, and other appropriate surfaces. This work may involve individually drawing and layering grain, color, glazing, and tonal variations to create a convincing wood appearance.
Marble & Stone Imitation — Hand-created finishes inspired by natural marble and stone, using layers of color, veining, movement, and tonal variation to interpret the character of the material.
Metallic & Patina Finishes — From sophisticated contemporary metallic surfaces to aged bronze, copper, pewter, gold, and other patinated effects.
Glazing & Antiquing — Translucent layers of color can add richness, depth, age, warmth, or subtle variation to walls, woodwork, furniture, and architectural details.
Textured & Layered Finishes — Custom finishes that use texture, movement, layering, brushing, stippling, and other techniques to create surfaces with visual depth and character.
Trompe l'Oeil & Artistic Details — Hand-painted effects that create the illusion of architectural elements, dimensional details, ornamentation, or imagery on a flat surface.
Gilding & Metallic Leaf — Gold, silver, and other metallic effects can be incorporated into furniture, moldings, frames, architectural details, and decorative focal points.
Pattern & Textile-Inspired Finishes — Hand-painted patterns and finishes can create effects inspired by wallpaper, fabric, linen, or other decorative materials while allowing the design and color to be customized for the space.
Furniture, Doors & Fine Woodwork — Decorative finishing is not limited to walls. Existing furniture, doors, cabinetry details, and architectural woodwork can sometimes be completely transformed through color, glazing, wood imitation, metallic finishes, or other specialty techniques.
Custom Samples & Artistic Development
One of the most important differences in custom decorative finishing is that the finish can be developed specifically for the project.
When appropriate, we create sample boards or test areas to study combinations of base color, glaze, texture, movement, sheen, layering, and artistic technique before the final finish is applied.
This process allows the client, designer, or architect to see and refine the concept before it becomes part of the room.
It is particularly valuable when we are developing a completely original finish or matching an existing surface.
Matching & Restoring Existing Decorative Finishes
After decades of decorative work, we are also frequently asked to solve a different problem: How do you repair or reproduce a finish that already exists?
A damaged decorative finish cannot always be corrected by simply finding the same paint color. The original effect may have been created through multiple layers, glazes, pigments, tools, textures, or hand-painted details.
Color Design 360 can study the existing surface and work to recreate its color, movement, texture, sheen, layering, and artistic character so that repaired or newly finished areas relate naturally to the original work.
This expertise is particularly useful for restoration, alterations, repairs, additions, damaged surfaces, and projects where another artisan's original finish needs to be reproduced.
More Than Faux Painting
To us, decorative finishing is where painting and fine art meet craftsmanship.
The success of a finish depends not only on knowing a technique, but on understanding color relationships, scale, composition, materials, transparency, texture, light, and when to stop.
That artistic judgment is what can make the difference between a surface that simply imitates a material and one that feels convincing and belongs naturally within the architecture and design of the room.
Whether you are looking for a subtle glaze, an elegant accent wall, a dramatic entrance door, realistic wood graining, marble or stone effects, a metallic finish, restoration of an existing decorative surface, or something completely original, Color Design 360 can develop a finish specifically for your project.
